Hampton Inn & Suites coming to Snellville

SNELLVILLE – A five-story, 102-room Hampton Inn & Suites will be built in the city following a unanimous vote by the Mayor and Council Monday night.

"Snellville's going to have a Hampton Inn," Mayor Tom Witts said following the vote.

The 64,400-square-foot building will be located in Park Place, a development located at the corner of Pharrs Road and Scenic Highway which recently saw the grand opening of Cracker Barrel, Freddie's, Zaxby's and Aspen Dental. An Outback Steakhouse is also planned for the development.

There had been concerns the hotel would cause traffic issues at the busy intersection, but, according to the developers, daily trips would be reduced by nearly two thirds of what was previously approved for a 12,000-square-foot restaurant.

"There is a need in the city for a quality limited-service hotel in the Scenic Highway Commercial Corridor as there are very few options for travelers to utilize while staying in the area," said Planning and Development Director Jason Thompson. "Eastside Medical Center, adjacent restaurants, retail businesses and neighboring residents could all benefit from having a nice Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton within the city. Finally, Hampton Inn & Suites, under the Hilton (Hotels) umbrella, has a reputation for being a high-quality brand and product that would be an asset to the city for many years to come."

Council to temper 124/78 construction woes for business owners by easing sign restrictions

SNELLVILLE – City officials are trying to ease the burden for business owners of the pending construction on the intersection of the highways 124 and 78, slated to begin this summer.

On Monday, Mayor and Council voted to allow a moratorium on temporary signage to be lifted for the construction of the Displaced Left Turn.

The moratorium begins at 12 a.m. March 14 and ends 18 months later at 12 a.m. on Sept. 15. A permit must be applied for and approved by the city's Planning Department.

Georgia Department of Transportation has condemned numerous parcels of land and been granted easements in the area surrounding the intersection which may force many businesses to remove previously approved monument and pylon signage.

"The Mayor and Council desire to prevent the properties affected by the construction from being harmed by the loss of their permanent signage and (they) believe it is in the best interest of the citizens of Snellville to allow limited temporary signage in the affected area," the resolution unanimously passed on Monday reads.

The moratorium only pertains to temporary signage. It does not include temporary banners and feather flags. Only a temporary single- or double-faced sign, not to exceed 32 square feet in area each and not to exceed 8 feet in total height may be erected with an approved sign permit from the City of Snellville. Only one temporary single- or double-faced sign may be erected per road frontage and/or curb-cut existing at the time of construction. For double-faced signs, the interior angle formed by the sign display area must not exceed 90 degrees. Signs must be located out of the public right-of-way and outside of the Georgia DOT temporary construction easement. Signs may be externally illuminated, provided the light source is shielded and does not produce a glare or shine into the eyes of passing motorists or pedestrians. Overhead, or above ground electrical service is be prohibited. An electrical permit is required and internally illuminated signs or cabinet signs are prohibited.

For more information on the intersection construction project visit www.snellville.org/highway-78-and-124-intersection.

Plan unveiled for new senior housing development in Snellville

SNELLVILLE – A plan for a senior housing development to be located behind Eastside Medical Center was released today.

Senior Lifestyle Corporation, a privately-held owner, operator and developer of seniors housing communities and its co-developer, Griffin Fine Living, LLC, announced development plans for The Sheridan at Eastside.

The Sheridan's construction is slated to begin in the fall of 2017 with a projected opening date for residents in late 2018.

The Sheridan at Eastside will feature 81 independent-living and 60 assisted-living apartment homes, 24 independent-living cottages and 32 memory care residences. The 190,000-square-foot retirement community will sit on approximately 15 acres of land a few blocks north of Ronald Parkway on Tree Lane, adjacent to Eastside Regional Medical Center.

"When Griffin Fine Living introduced us to this opportunity, we knew it was the perfect setting for a Sheridan Collection thanks to the property's naturally appealing scenery, its proximity to a vibrant commercial center, and its location in a city that is arguably the jewel of Gwinnett County," said Bob Gawronski, vice president of development and acquisitions for Senior Lifestyle Corporation. "One thing that makes our properties stand out is that we complement our upscale amenities and proximity to healthcare and area shopping with exceptional care and hospitality that makes residents feel at home and gives families peace of mind."

Residents of the community will have access to about 24,000 square feet of common space with multiple dining options, a spa, theater, fitness and wellness center, art studio, business center, various multi-purpose lounges, a swimming pool, and more. In addition, the future retirement community is part of a growing residential zone, with a planned single-family residential development next door. The property will also feature outdoor access to walking paths leading to a 5-acre pond on the campus.

Once fully occupied, The Sheridan at Eastside will directly create more than 100 new full and part-time permanent jobs in the community.

"We are very pleased to welcome Senior Lifestyle Corporation to the Snellville community," said City Manager Butch Sanders. "Adding The Sheridan at Eastside in an area of town that is increasingly becoming more residential means we are able to provide comfortable, convenient and care-centric residence options for our senior citizens, in proximity to their extended families."

For more information on The Sheridan at Eastside call 770-983-6843.

Senior Lifestyle Corporation currently operates more than 180 communities across the country. Its new Sheridan Collection of newly constructed retirement communities includes four recently completed developments with several more Sheridan developments planned to open in select markets within the next few years.

Sept. 11 Memorial unveiled at City Hall

Keval Amin, of Boy Scout Troop 506, created a 9/11 Memorial which now sits on the lawn of City Hall.

SNELLVILLE – Keval Amin was just an infant during the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

But the soon-to-be Eagle Scout chose to create an everlasting memorial recalling the tragic events of that day. On Monday, that memorial was revealed during a ceremony on the front lawn of City Hall.

"I was 6 months old when the terrorist attacks of 9/11 occurred," Amin said, "My dad told me this was a sad day in the history of America. He told me that I watched the second tower go down while sitting on his lap. Ever since I became a Boy Scout and found out I have to do a service project for my Eagle rank, I wanted to build a 9/11 Memorial for those who died, those who served and those who carried on."

Amin contacted the Port Authority of New York/ New Jersey and obtained a piece of the World Trade Center which sits on top of the memorial. The bottom of the monument, painted by Billie Bradford, features an American Flag.

Mayor Tom Witts said he was impressed by Amin's dedication to the project.

"This will be an excellent addition to the City Hall campus and our other two (Veterans and Vietnam) memorials," he said.

Amin said he wanted to thank the Snellville Home Depot, the Snellville Lowe's, Randy's Perennials and Water Gardens, Northside Tool Rental and Awards Atlanta for donations to complete the project. He also thanked the Port Authority of New York/ New Jersey, City Manager Butch Sanders, Witts, the members of Boy Scout Troop 506, his uncle Suvas Patel for helping with design and his parents and grandparents for their help and support.
