Banner program to honor military veterans

SNELLVILLE – Already known for honoring veterans through the Veterans Memorial, the city is unveiling yet another way to pay tribute to those who served our country.

The Snellville American Hero Military Banner Program is a tribute designed to recognize and honor veterans who are currently serving or who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The display of the American Hero Military Banners will contribute to the community's quality of life which lends a special character to the city. All proceeds will benefit the Snellville Veterans' Memorial.

The banners, approximately 18 inches wide and 38 inches long, will be displayed on the lamp posts in the Snellville Towne Center area along Oak Road, Clower Street and Wisteria Drive. The cost to memorialize or honor a veteran is $200 for a banner located on the Towne Green or in front of the Veterans Memorial and $150 for all other lamp posts in the Towne Center area.

Two different banners will be displayed on each lamp post, one on each side. Location of the banner is at the discretion of Snellville Tourism and Trade, however, requests for up to two family members to be displayed on the same pole will be accommodated on a first come first serve basis.

A portrait-style photo scan of the service person in dress uniform is required and must be scanned at a minimum size of 5-by-7 inches and at a minimum dpi of 150. Please label the scan with the veteran's name and e-mail to kelmca@comcast.net.

Oak Road to be closed for Towne Green construction

SNELLVILLE – A portion of Oak Road will be closed April 2-10 in an effort to make pedestrian access to the Towne Green safer.

The closure will coincide with Gwinnett County Public Schools' Spring Break and will allow for the building of a raised and lighted crosswalk. Oak Road will be closed from the entrance of City Hall to Highway 78. The City Hall entrance should remain open a majority of the time.

"The road is being closed to provide the workers with the safest construction environment and to provide the contractor with the best opportunity to provide the city with the fastest and best construction solution," Economic Development Director Eric Van Otteren said. "We have discussed a couple of different options to closing the road. Based on worker safety and construction processes, closing the road is the best option."

Police Chief Roy Whitehead said people should avoid Oak Road as much as possible and are asked to use Clower Street as it will remain open during this construction period.

The construction is part of the Towne Green renovations in front of City Hall which will upgrade the space used for festivals and the Farmers' Market. The Towne Green project is scheduled to be completed by May 1.
