Council cracks down on street racing

Stiff penalties for street racers and race organizers and spectators are now at the disposal of the Snellville Police Department following a measure approved Monday.

As reports of street racing have increased in recent years in the Metro Atlanta area, city leaders have been looking for a way to curb these often raucous events.

Now, under the new ordinance, “no person shall knowingly act as an organizer of a street racing exhibition or reckless driving exhibition” or face fines. Organizers and racers shall be punished by a fine not to exceed $1,000, imprisonment for a term not to exceed six months, or any combination thereof. Any motor vehicle used in any street racing exhibition or reckless driving exhibition may be removed and impounded by police. An impounded vehicle may be held in impound at owner’s expense for not less than 30 days or final adjudication of the case, to the maximum extent allowed under state law.

The ordinance is also tough on those who choose to watch and/or record the street races as they will face penalties under the new ordinance as well.
